Worship or Man-made rules?

6/18/2009 12:11 PM
I was reading in Isaiah 29 today and came across a verse that is very familiar.  Isaiah 29:13 saysAnd so the Lord says, 'These people say they are mine.  They honor me with their lips, but their hears are far from me.  And their worship of me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote." (NLT)

What got me thinking is was whether or not we actually worship God.  Just because we come on Sunday mornings or evenings does not necessitate worship.  Coming does not mean you worshipped.  I know that there are times in my life when I have either been distracted or 'not in the mood' to worship.  And what  a horrible thing that is.  How can I look at Jesus and say, 'Hey I know you died for me and took the Father's wrath for me, but right now I am just too busy, tired, upset . . . to worship you.

We like to say that it is the thought that counts, that at least we came.  That if we did not come out of love at least we came out of duty.  The problem with that is in this verse.  God does not want people who honor him with their lips and follow man made rules and regulations.  He wants people that love him with their whole beings and hearts.

Think of it this way.  It is Valentine's day.  You, being a smart husband, remember and buy flowers for you wife, arrive home early, fix the sink, make dinner etc.  Your wife walks in sees all this is and is just floored by your love.  She goes up to thank you, but you stop her.  You says, "Honey, it was my duty to do this for you because it is Valentines day."  You just ruined the gift and you might as well have stayed at work.

Is God of so little importance that we cannot love Him the way He deserves.  My call to you is to worship God, with a heart of passion and desire, and not out of duty.

An Album you must check out!

Clique 116 has just put out a new album called "13 Letters."  If you have never heard of Clique 116, they host a number of today's best reformed rappers like, Lecrae, Tedashii and others.  The album, 13 Letters, takes the 13 letters of Paul and breaks them down lyrically.  There are several reasons why I recommend this album.

First, it is very good rap.  The rhyming, beat and chorus' are extremely well timed and on point.  Each of these rappers brings a different style, so the album is quite eclectic.  If you like T.I., Tu Pac, or Eminem, you will like the style of these artist.

Second, it is profoundly deep.  Each of these songs breaks down the letters of Paul in a deep but intelligible way.  They provide not only sound theology, but deep biblical thought as to the meaning and theme of each of these letters.  If you are trying to understand what Paul is saying to the Corinthians (for example) you can listen to a four minute song which will take you through the letter and help you see the overall themes and deep spiritual insights.  You can tell that each of these rappers took the time to read and understand the letters of Paul.  Then they broke them down in such a way that people can understand Paul.

Third, there is a study guide.  You can actually use this cd as a study guide for teaching through Paul's letters.  It is inexpensive and very helpful and practical.  It is the first time that I have seen an Christian music artist do something like this, and hopefully it is new trend.

What I respect about these men is that they did not compromise the word of God for lyrics.  They stayed true to the word and created a masterpiece of music and scripture.  Take the time and the money and invest it with this album.
